Compact Filters

Modern units can be sited beside or even in the pond, carrying out the necessary mechanical and biological filtration, often with integral UV units to help control green water. Correctly sized filters are straightforward to maintain, and if required, we can carry out the annual service of the UV unit.

Plant filter beds

On really large ponds conventional “off the shelf” filters can struggle to provide effective, affordable and aesthetic solutions. In such cases we design bespoke plant filter beds using a combination of lightweight aggregates, marginal planting, and pump flow rates based on our experience to give reliable results with low maintenance.

For higher stocks of fish an efficient means of waste removal is necessary. The BubbleBead Filters (shown to the right), capture dirt in a floating bed of tiny plastic beads, and the dirt is simply flushed away on a regular basis by turning a valve that instigates the draining/cleaning process.

These filters have proven themselves on koi ponds and in commercial establishments where large numbers of fish are held. Aquapic has supplied technical support for such systems since they were introduced to the UK market.

Glassfibre multi-chambered filters (shown left) are a more traditional option for koi pools, allowing a range of different media to be used. The individual drains to each chamber simplify cleaning. They do require careful siting and sizing if they are to work at their best. Newer options can incorporate moulded plastic cases and moving-media.

Filtration Glossary:

Mechanical Filtration - involves the settlement or capture of the solids present in the water. Important to keep the water clear, especially where fish are stirring up sediments

Biological Filtration - uses the natural purifying organisms found in ponds, concentrating and enhancing their effects to break down wastes.

Chemical Filtration - uses special media to absorb dangerous toxins or remove excess nutrients that cause unwanted algae growth

UV Units - expose pondwater to ultra-violet light in a carefully controlled manner. This damages the cells of green “pea-soup” algae and helps to clear the water without resorting to chemical treatments. More details here.
